A report released recently by Healthgrades, the nation’s most trusted, independent source of physician information and hospital quality outcomes, named West Boca Medical Center a recipient of both the 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award and the 2015 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award.

This also marks the ninth consecutive year that the hospital has been a recipient of the Healthgrades Maternity Care Excellence Award. It has also earned several other awards for its patience care including an “A” Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group five years in a row, as well as the 2014 Kids Crown Award for Best Emergency Room in Palm Beach County.

“We have a longstanding reputation for providing outstanding care to women and babies in the community,” said Mitch Feldman, the hospital’s CEO, said in a news release. “These distinctions are proof of our commitment to delivering high quality services on a daily basis.”

Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for virtually every hospital in the 13 states that provide all-payer state data from 2011 through 2013, according to the release. Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes:

  • From 2011-2013, if all hospitals in the 13 states included in this analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, on average, 92,883 patients experiencing one or more in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.
  • Further, from 2011-2013, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, have, on average, a 35.1 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Labor and Delivery Excellence Award.
  • From 2011-2013, if all hospitals in the 13 states included in the analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Healthgrades 2015 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award, on average, 100,905 patients with one or more in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided.
  • Additionally, from 2011-2013, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award have, on average, a 34.4 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award.

“When selecting a hospital, access to quality information can mean the difference between life and death, so it’s more important than ever that consumers research their choice,” Evan Marks, chief strategy officer for Healthgrades, said in a release. “Consumers can have confidence that West Boca Medical Center has demonstrated an established commitment to maternal, obstetrics and gynecological care.”
