Boca Raton Airport Authority to Hold Meeting On June 17

By: Robert S Weinroth

AGENCY: Boca Raton Airport Authority

LOCATION OF MEETING: City Council Chambers
Boca City Hall 201 W Palmetto Park Rd Boca Raton FL 33432

WHEN: Wednesday 17 June 2015 at 6PM

The Boca Raton Airport Authority will be holding the first meeting with its newly appointed members and will, as part of its regular meeting, be selecting a new Chair, Vice-Chair and Secretary/Treasurer. It is anticipated many of the questions raised about the decision by the City Council to appoint one of its own and the Deputy City Manager onto the Authority Board will be addressed during this meeting.

In addition, the Authority’s Independent Auditor, Grau & Associates will present the audited financials for the fiscal year ended 30 Sep 2014.

The Authority Board will also review and consider the conceptual design for the proposed Customs and Border Protection Facilities at the airport.

Perhaps the most interesting item on the agenda will be a presentation on a proposed Engineering Materials Arresting System (EMAS) for the end of Runway 5 (if that doesn’t excite you, I don’t know what will).

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working to improve Runway Safety Areas (RSAs) at airports throughout the US. The RSA provides a graded area in the event an aircraft overruns, undershoots, or veers off the side of the runway.

Where, as at the Boca Raton Airport (BCT), it is not practicable to achieve the full standard RSA because there may be a lack of available land. EMAS uses crushable material placed at the end of a runway to stop an aircraft that overruns the runway. The tires of the aircraft sink into the lightweight material and the aircraft is decelerated as it rolls through the material.

AN EMAS was installed at PBI in 2011.

The Authority will consider a proposal to seek bids for construction of an EMAS at BCT.
