     Boca Raton high schools continue to be one of the brightest spots in the city. Earlier last week, US News and World Reports released their National High School Rankings and both Spanish River and Boca Raton High School made the list.

        A proposed ordinance by County Commissioner Mary Lou Berger banning panhandling on County roads and medians, had its first hearing Tuesday. Under the proposal, panhandlers, protesters, peddlers, and anyone else would have to stay off county roads and road medians while collecting money, waving signs or passing out materials. The county’s new rule would apply to county and state roads, outside of city limits.

     Dogs have to stay on leashes while stray cats get a new chance at freedom under changes to animal rules Palm Beach County commissioners endorsed Tuesday. The county’s tougher leash law would no longer allow dogs to go without leashes when away from home even if they are considered obedient enough to follow voice commands. The new leash law wouldn’t apply to service dogs, law enforcement dogs or at dog parks and dog beaches.

      The 2015 Point-in-Time Count indicates that across Palm Beach County during a 24-hour time period, 1,421 individuals and families were considered homeless as defined by the federal “Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act.” The count included those staying in emergency shelters, transitional housing and places not meant for human habitation.     

      Motorists along Interstate 95 can expect nightly traffic disruptions as construction workers build the new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard. Traffic will be rerouted to newly paved outside lanes just north and south of the Spanish River Boulevard overpass. The shift will continue each night to May 21.

     Office Depot shuttered 20 stores this quarter, throwing 1000 people into the unemployment line.

     The mother of a 20-year college student shot to death by Boca Raton police two years ago is suing the city in a lawsuit moved this week from state to federal court. Arlene Grimm claims her son, Adam Donohue, was suffering from a “psychotic break” before his fatal encounter at about 8:45 p.m. March 8, 2013 with two police officers near the intersection of Military Trail and Spanish River Boulevard.

     Fledgling Avatar Airlines is taking to the Internet to pay for its wings. The startup based in Boca Raton still does not have federal approval to fly, but it has set up a crowdfunding site in an attempt to raise $5 million for initial costs. Crowdfunding is a method of raising money on the Internet from large groups of people — from small donors to major investors — who support a cause or project. It’s typically used for startup companies, social causes or even personal emergencies. Avatar has launched a 30-day campaign called HelpAvatarFly.com asking for donations ranging from $5 to nearly $10,000.

     Artificial turf vs. natural grass on Boca playing fields has finally come to a head after a lengthy report and at least two public meetings. Using a mix of the two field surfaces seems to be the consensus of the Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District, which is waiting for a city agreement to add four fields in Phase II at de Hoernle Park/Spanish River Athletic Facilities. The turf issue also affects fields at Patch Reef, which the district is updating now. Also in the mix is the future of two fields at A.D. Henderson University School on the Florida Atlantic University campus.

     Nickel and diming Spirit airlines racked up another title as the second most complained about airline according to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.

     South Florida’s major cruise operator Royal Caribbean has ordered its fourth Oasis class cruise ship. The billion dollar ship will join three other mega cruise liners that make a fortune for the cruise line, carrying 5,000 passengers and is in service for 7 years before dry dock, with an average gross profit per Oasis class ship is $20,000 per week. Last year RCCL netted $89 million in profits.

     Delray Medical Center made $19.8 million in profits in 2013.

          The Delray Beach Playhouse tops off its 2014-15 Season with one of Neil Simon’s best-loved comedies, Barefoot in the Park.  In this affectionately autobiographical play, Simon tells the story of Paul and Corie Bratter, two newlyweds settling into their first Manhattan apartment.      Office Depot shareholders will meet June 19 in Boca to vote on the$6.3 billion proposed merger with rival Staples, but the Federal Trade Commission has not yet ruled on approving the merger to proceed. If completed, the headquarters would be in Framingham, Mass., with a “presence”  in Boca.
