   Palm Beach County’s baseball stadium push got a $5 million boost Tuesday in the bid to lure two more Major League Baseball teams for spring training.

The County Commission approved spending the initial $5 million of a $135 million proposal to build a stadium, even though a deal has yet to be finalized with the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals.

 

    Uber can keep operating in Palm Beach County thanks to a temporary deal approved Tuesday for the ride-scheduling alternative to taxis. The temporary deal allows Uber to continue operating through September without facing fines while the county considers changing its regulations to accommodate the popular ride-scheduling service.

    Profits are a pleasure at Publix as the giant retailer revealed it had racked up $30 billion in sales last year, and $1.7 billion in profits. Publix has a 50% market share in South Florida with nearly 250 stores, employing over 24,000 people. The company is employee owned and its share price rose 15% to nearly $40 per share on the sales numbers. Same store sales reached a 5% increase over last year. The Fifth Ave. shoppes store has closed for renovations.

 

     State lawmakers launched their legislative session a week ago Tuesday, but they have little in common with the average family, as there are 17 millionaires with a combined total net worth of $144 million. Average net worth is $3.7 million in the Senate and $1.4 million in the House. Wealth equality will not be a topic among the Millionaire club, according to Miami Herald columnist Fred Grimm.

 

     The beleaguered and bankrupt day trip gambling ship Island Breeze, which sailed out of the Port of Palm Beach may have a long shot new lease on life. A Puerto Rican company which owns most of the gambling equipment and is a major creditor, is negotiating with the Port to take over operations. Island Breeze declared bankruptcy in November after suffering numerous mechanical setbacks and a financial meltdown.

 

     Numbers just released by a financial research firm revealed that Palm Beach County led the state in wealth transfers via insurance payouts and estate taxes, with the county racking up $580 million in asset transfers and the county ranked 19th in inherited wealth in the U.S. Leading the country was Los Angeles with $9 billion in transfers.

 

     State owned insurer of last resort, Citizens Property Insurance Company, has been approved by state regulators to unload 80,000 policies into the private sector. That brings the total policies shed to 480,000 this year alone. Ten private insurers are in the line up to take policies that Citizens is dumping to reduce exposure before Hurricane season, but customers can choose to remain with Citizens if desired.

 

    South Florida cruise company Royal Caribbean is shelling out $1 billion to build its third Oasis-class cruise ship. The gigantic vessel will carry 5,400 passengers with a launch date out of Port Everglades in April, 2016. Already the line operates Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas, which each carry over 5,000 passengers and generate over $5 million in profits for a 7 day cruise. The cruise line has two other Oasis cruise ships slated for delivery.

 

     Over 5,000 inbound and outbound flights were cancelled due to the recent storms up north causing major disruptions for travelers and hotel purveyors. The storm also made hotel occupancy rates soaring with a record 85% occupancy for January, with tourists spending $150 million for the month predicting February spending to be an even stronger month. In a related matter, Palm Beach County racked up $35 million in bed tax collections last year, up 12% from 2013. The county welcomed over 6 million visitors which spent $7 billion, according to tourism officials.

 

     There are 165 hotels in Palm Beach County with 15,849 hotel rooms and tourism officials predict a 90% occupancy rate for March.

Subscribers for the Kravis on Broadway series will receive their renewals in mid-March.
