     President Obama’s illegal migrant amnesty program campaign kicks off in 11 days and according to a migration policy institute 20,000 illegal migrants in Palm Beach County will be safe from deportation. The Institute also reported there were 632,000 illegal migrants in the state with 55,000 in Palm Beach County alone. Nearly two thirds were born in Central America or Mexico and 75% have lived in South Florida for more than five years.

 

     The Dodge report revealed an upswing in South Florida construction projects last year, totaling a sizeable $10 billion, up 52% from the previous year. Residential building reached $6.6 billion, while commercial contracts hit $3.4 billion, but the skilled labor market continues to be in critical condition. When the South Florida housing market crashed, skilled labor went looking for jobs elsewhere and they never came back, so now the improved construction industry is suffering from a lack of skilled tradesmen and contractors say it’s only going to get worse.

 

     South Florida’s three major airports reported healthy traffic figures for last year. Palm Beach International revealed 5.9 million passengers for the year, up 3.4%, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International set a record pace with 24.6 million passengers, including 4.5 million international travelers while Miami International reported a record 41 million passengers for last year, up 8%.

 

     FP&L serves 4.7 million customers, posted $1.5 billion in profits for 2014 and added 68,000 new customers in the 4th quarter of 2014.
