DeZwirek’s $2 Million Gift to Marcus Neuroscience Institute Names Center for Spinal Disorders and Back Pain

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation announced today that it has received a $2 million donation from Phillip and Peggy DeZwirek to name the Phillip and Peggy DeZwirek Center for Spinal Disorders and Back Pain in the Hospital’s new Marcus Neuroscience Institute.

The gift will be used to fund programs, technology, capital projects and services for the Center. The Center is part of the newly opened Marcus Neuroscience Institute, housed in the 56,000 sq. ft. Schmidt Family Pavilion, with four dedicated operating rooms and a 20- bed neuro intensive care and step-down unit. A cornerstone of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute is its distinctive technology. The Institute contains four dedicated operating rooms, including one equipped with intraoperative MRI and two with intraoperative CT, capabilities found in only a handful of facilities across the country. Another distinguishing feature is the Institute’s biplane angiography suite, a critically important component in the diagnosis and care of a host of neurological conditions.

Phillip DeZwirek, a Toronto based financier and philanthropist, was the founder and is currently Chairman Emeritus of CECO Environmental Corp. of Cincinnati, a company he led as chief executive officer from 1979 until early 2010, establishing the worlds’ largest pure air and water solutions environmental company. Through the DeZwirek Family Holding Company, the DeZwireks hold multiple successful private enterprises. Previously, Mr. DeZwirek was a founder and Director of Pan Ocean Oil Corp., which he merged with Marathon Oil Company in 1976.

As a community-minded leader, Phillip DeZwirek has participated in the building of a movie theatre and gymnasium at Sick Kid’s Hospital (The Hospital for Sick Children) in Toronto and endowed the entire first floor of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, as well as building a research center to support stem cell study at Toronto Western Hospital. He also supports many Jewish organizations. In addition to his donation to Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Mr. DeZwirek endowed the lobby of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute. He is a graduate of McGill University.

“We are so appreciative of the DeZwirek’s generosity,” said Jan Savarick, president of Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation. “Back pain is a common problem that afflicts nine out of ten adults at some point in their lifetime, and is a leading cause of disability. This wonderful gift will have a substantial impact on many of our patients and advance care for the entire community.”
