South Florida’s airlines are picking up a huge break in the plunging oil prices. Jet fuel has plummeted .37 a gallon from $2.24 in the past 30 days and is now $1.92 and heading lower according to experts. The lower prices mean billions to the industry’s bottom line and there’s little chance fares will be lower due to the windfall. 30% of an airline’s operating cost is fuel and carriers flying from PBIA to New York Metro will save around $4,000 one way in fuel costs.

Taking over the policies are insurance companies with dubious records, handling any storm claims and suspected reserves to survive any major hurricane, say Citizen’s critics.
