Know Your Golf

Golf courses are often called “links” or “the links”, but a links course actually refers to a particular kind of golf course that requires a particular style of play. Links courses are the original golf courses, found in Scotland centuries ago. They were built on the sandy dunes of Scotland’s east coast and got the name “links” because this was the land that “linked” the sea to the more fertile land used as farmland further inland. Perhaps the fact that it was not being used for farmland was why it was chosen for golf.

Because they’re built on narrow strips of land, links courses are usually laid out with the first nine holes going straight out from the clubhouse and the last nine coming straight back alongside them. Today they’re built all over the world. The most famous links course in the United States  is Shinnecock Hills Golf Links on Long Island in New York.
