A seventh-grader at Eagles Landing Middle School has been awarded first place at the National SECME Competition for Middle School Essay, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned.

The latest honor is among many that Christopher Palumbo has earned since he began competing in the Palm Beach County SECME program three years ago.

“Christopher is a shining example of dedication and hard work and we are so proud at Eagles of his National SECME win,” says Eagles Landing’s Principal Cynthia Chiapetta.

Christopher will be honored at the National SECME competition in Birmingham, Ala. in June.

SECME (Science, Engineering, Communication, and Mathematics Enrichment) was founded in 1975 by the Engineering Deans from six southeastern universities:  Alabama, Florida, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Tuskegee.

SECME is a program that strives to increase the pool of historically under-represented and under-served students who will be prepared to enter and complete post-secondary studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  This program reaches out to elementary and secondary students who are historically under-represented in the STEM fields with the long-term goal of creating a more diverse workforce.  The School District of Palm Beach County supports the goals and mission of SECME.

Today SECME is a non-profit alliance that extends to 70 school systems, 43 major engineering universities, and industries and agencies in 16 states, the District of Columbia, and Grand Bahamas. For more information, visitwww.secme.org.
