Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities awards scholarships
BOCA RATON – The Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities has awarded three scholarships.
A $1,000 scholarship went to Lynn University’s Institute for Achievement. The office will select a student with physical or cognitive challenges who will benefit from the grant.
The unrestricted gift from the Advisory Board, the largest in the Board’s history, concludes a multi-year program in which the Board awarded scholarship dollars to a Lynn student in need of financial assistance. Board members have personally contributed to providing this annual scholarship award.
The scholarship grant was presented to Brittany Glazier of the Lynn University Institute of Achievement and Learning by City of Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities chairman Jay Van Vechten at the Board’s monthly meeting.
The Lynn University Institute of Achievement and Learning provides students with a tutoring center, testing center and assistive technology services. These services are provided to support students in achieving academic success at the University as well as to assist them in developing the necessary compensatory skills they will need to be successful in their life after graduation.
Also, the Advisory Board presented a $500 gift for the soon to be built new Boca Raton Public Library. The check has been earmarked to purchase a wide variety of consumer friendly books about cross-disabilities and the impact physical and cognitive challenges have on people with disabilities, their families and the community at large.
The $500 check was presented to Thomas Sloane, the new Manager of Library Services at the City of Boca Raton, by Van Vechten. Sloane, who joined the City’s library system in December of 2011, was the 2009 recipient of the Library Leader of the Year from Florida Library Association.
I’m very excited with the prospects of developing an array of materials that address both physical and mental challenges across all age levels,” said Sloane. “This is what a public library should do and I’m honored the Board is helping our team meet this goal.”
Boca Raton recently announced it plans to build a 41,000 to 46,000 square-foot library on Boca Raton Boulevard.
Also, the Advisory Board has awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the Florida Atlantic University Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). The office will select a student with physical or cognitive challenges who will benefit from the grant.
The scholarship grant was presented to Lynn Jackson of the OSD by Van Vechten at the Board’s monthly meeting.
The Office of Students with Disabilities provides comprehensive academic support services include advocacy, academic accommodations, assistive technology equipment/software training, an assistive technology computer lab, learning strategies training, and an active student organization.
The Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities serves as an advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities. The Advisory Board meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM at 150 Crawford Boulevard, adjoining Boca Raton City Hall. The public is welcome to attend.
