Boca Raton Police – VIPER NEWS

Suspect says he is stressed and was in a rage

Boca Raton, FL – On Friday, March 4, at 11:30 p.m., Boca Raton Police Officer Stephen Bissoon agreed to give a pedestrian a ride from 1500 West Yamato Road to the area of 200 West Yamato Road. As Officer Bissoon was driving east on Yamato Road, a black GMC Yukon Denali SUV sideswiped his marked police car on the driver’s side, with enough force to cause both vehicles to swerve up onto the sidewalk. The driver of the SUV, later identified as Paul Stevens, made an abrupt u-turn (heading west in the eastbound lanes) and then drove directly at Officer Bissoon’s police car, swerving right before impact and continuing westbound.

Officer Bissoon checked Yamato Road for the SUV, finally locating it just south of Yamato on NW 2nd Avenue.Officer Bissoon stopped just south of the intersection and exited his police car. Stevens drove north in the southbound lanes and aimed his vehicle directly at Officer Bissoon. Officer Bissoon fired off one round from his duty weapon at the on-coming SUV and it drove away.

Boca Raton police officers located the SUV in the 4400 block of North Federal Highway and Stevens was arrested. No one was injured and the bullet was not recovered. The police car, however, had significant damage from the driver’s side front tire to the rear tire. The SUV had considerable damage to the passenger side.

Stevens made several statements to Boca Raton detectives. Stevens said he remembered hitting a car, then he turned around going after the vehicle because he knew, “The game was on.” Stevens also said he knew it was a police car, but he was in a rage and had been very stressed about personal issues, so he directed his anger and violence at the police officer. Stevens also admitted to taking various drugs.

Stevens was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon on a police officer, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, DUI and fleeing and eluding. If anyone has additional information about this crime, they are asked to call Detective Jeff Clare at (561) 338-1246 or Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS.
