Can Your Bone Density Cause Your Face to Look Younger Or Older?… You Bet!

By: Oleda Baker

We think of bone loss mostly as affecting the strength and health of the bones in our legs, arms and spine, making them brittle or developing osteoporoses. We may worry about losing inches in height. But I’ll bet you haven’t thought of how it might cause your face to age faster. I certainly hadn’t, until a few years ago.

Poor bone density also causes the facial bones to become smaller and more brittle as you grow older. If your bone density is not what it should be, and if you should gain too many pounds, the shape of your face changes faster. Add more tissue to a shrinking facial frame and you will get faster-sagging, deeper lines and wrinkles. Strong bone density and no weight gain equal a younger looking face and neck.

I’m telling you this so you will check with your doctor throughout the years to make sure you are getting enough calcium and/or hormones to keep your bones strong for life…it’s not only for your health in general but for your beauty too.  (Yes, I am on Hormone Replacement Therapy under the watchful eye of my doctor and have been so for over 20 years)

So now you need to compensate for not taking your best care? …don’t we all…even if you more or less did everything right.  So below is a list of choices we have to make sure Mother Nature doesn’t keep working us over too much.

Cosmeceutical Products That Help Treat the Surface of the Skin As

Well As Rebuild Cells Under the Surface

Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) products, which are available over the counter not only rejuvenate the surface of the facial skin, but also cause old, flat cells under the skin to regenerate – to become fuller and more youthful. It tightens pores and assists in giving an overall youthful appearance. I have used AHA products most of my adult life. To be effective it should contain 15% alpha-hydroxy acids. (For more information on AHA go to www.oleda.com “Skin Care”.

Botox

Botox injection, which you can get from services like Botox in Burlington, ON, is a cosmetic procedure used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Small, diluted amounts can be injected directly into specific muscles, causing controlled weakening of the muscles. As a result, the injected muscle cannot contract, causing the wrinkles to relax and soften.

Collagen Injectable Fillers

Injectable anti-aging dermal fillers such as Dermal Fillers in Stuart, FL are one of the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments. Dermal Fillers (just like the Dermal Fillers in Harding Township, NJ) are ideal for replacing lost facial volume as well as restoring moisture in the skin. As we age, the underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and firm begin to break down due to the effects of gravity, sun exposure, diet, genetic factors and years of facial muscle movement. These factors over time contribute to the development of lines, wrinkles, and folds in the face.

Types of fillers:

According to expert services like Dermal Fillers in Newport News VA, there are various types of fillers.

Zyderm and Zyplast are bovine derived collagen products that replace the collagen your skin loses over time. Zyderm and Zyplast collagen are placed just beneath the skin, in the dermis where the body accepts it as its own.

CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast are bioengineered human collagen products that are used for similar indications as Zyderm and Zyplast but have the advantage of not needing a skin test prior to the first treatment.

Juvederm is an injectable gel approved by the FDA to last up to a year. Especially good for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.

Artecoll is a synthetic filler and because it’s synthetic you are at higher risk of an allergic reaction but it lasts much longer. Should have skin test.

Autologen is an injection of your own collagen. It’s extracted from another place on your body. There’s no risk of allergic reaction but the results are only temporary.

Restylane is a clear gel. It contains hyaluronic acid, which naturally occurs in humans, so there’s little chance for an allergic reaction. It’s biodegradable, so your body will absorb it within about six months of the injection.

Until next time,

Love, Oleda
