Tri-Rail Looks to Open New Station at Boca Town Center

Tri-Rail is planning a new station in Boca Raton set to open in 2018. The new station would allow for commuters to use city transport to access the nearby Boca Town Center Mall and the surrounding homes and apartments as it is planned to be built off of Military Trail near the Shops at Boca Center.

Tri-Rail’s Boca Raton station off of Yamato Road is the busiest station with 1600 passengers daily, causing Tri-Rail officials to believe the new station will be supported with enough commuters to make the plans worthwhile.

The new station being built will relieve some of the vehicular traffic on Glades Road by moving some commuters to public transport. Glades Road is currently one of the county’s busiest thoroughfares according to city statistics and cannot sustain the daily traffic effectively.

The locations being evaluated for the site of the new station could face problems due to the lack of space for parking, causing the new station to be heavily reliant on shuttles much like the Yamato station. The city has made plans to support the station with the needed shuttles due to the high demand and support from the community for the new station.

The Palm Beach Metro Planning Organization is allocating $8.5 million and the Florida Department of Transportation has more than matched that, budgeting over $10 million for the project.

The over $18 million project is set to start with Tri-Rail evaluating the area for the best location over the next two years before beginning construction.
