Newsweek names two Boca high schools among best in nation

BOCA RATON — Based on Newsweek’s Magazine “2011 America’s Best High Schools” article, in Palm Beach County, Suncoast Community High School is ranked 9th, Alexander W, Dreyfoos, Jr. School of the Arts is ranked 40th, Spanish River Community High School is ranked 185th and Boca Raton Community High School is ranked 276th in the nation.

According to Newsweek Magazine’s June 20, 2011 issue, “To compile the 2011 list of the top high schools in America, Newsweek reached out to administrators, principals, guidance counselors, and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate coordinators at more than 10,000 public high schools across the country.

In order to be considered for the list, each school had to complete a survey requesting specific data from the 2009-2010 academic year. In total, more than 1,100 schools were assessed to produce the final list of the top 500 high schools.”

The article says, “To this end, each school’s score is comprised of six components: graduation rate (25 percent), college matriculation rate (25 percent), AP tests taken per graduate (25 percent), average SAT/ACT scores (10 percent), average AP/IB/AICE scores (10 percent), and AP courses offered (5 percent).
